Simon Brookhouse began his early career as an accountant with BP Chemicals in Grangemouth, Scotland.  He spent some time in the life insurance sector, and then moved to London in 1993 to join an investment bank.  Simon was in investment banking for over 20 years, spending more than half of his career in Hong Kong and Australia - latterly as Head of Pacific Rim Equities for Merrill Lynch.  Simon was also Global Head of Equities for HSBC, and most recently, Global Head of Equities for Standard Chartered Bank.  Simon is married to Amanda, and they have three adult children.  He became a governor of Halstead in 2018, and at the same time joined the Strategy Board for the Beacon School at Banstead in Surrey.


Richard Roberts is Managing Director of Trident Garages Ltd. He was elected as a Governor in June 2011, also having had previous experience as a Governor of 2 local state schools. He is married with two daughters, both ex Halstead girls, and one of them a former head girl. Richard is Vice Chair of Governors, Chair of the Nominations Committee and a member of the Finance Committee.

Mr C. Betts B.Sc. (Hons)

Chris Betts has been a Chartered Surveyor for over 28 years specialising in the management, development and investment of predominantly commercial real estate for a range of property owners. Both of his two daughters attended Halstead.  Chris is joint chair of the Property and Health & Safety Committee.

Mr D. Burke FCA

David Burke is a retired Chartered Accountant with 35 years’ experience acting for owner managed businesses and charities. He has also served as Honorary Treasurer of Sunningdale Golf Club. He has two children and his daughter is a former pupil of Halstead. David is the Chairman of the Finance Committee and Bursary Committee and a member of the Nominations Committee.

Mrs C. Connelly MSCBA FCIPD'S 

Cheryl was educated at Northumbria University where she completed a honours degree in Business Management. Having spent five years in the Civil Service, Cheryl moved to the Training and Enterprise Council where she advised public and private businesses on best practice. Cheryl spent the next 10 years as an inspector with the Audit Commission where she led corporate compliance inspections at County and District councils, Police authorities and Fire authorities across the UK. Cheryl then moved into the Education sector as a Business Manager and Clerk to the Governors, spending six years in the maintained sector before spending the last three years in the same role at an independent school. During this time, Cheryl also completed her Fellowship in Personnel and Development and MSc in Business Education Management. Cheryl has served 16 years as a school governor, including as Chair of Governors and Chair of Finance and Resources. Cheryl joined AGBIS in September 2019 as Director or Training.  Cheryl is a member of the Marketing Committee.

Mr S. Hartley LLB

Simon Hartley has been a solicitor for over 25 years and is a partner at Norton Rose Fulbright LLP. He has two daughters, both of whom attended Halstead. Simon was elected a Governor in 2016 and is a member of the Finance Committee and the Nominations Committee. 



Peter Harwood has been Vicar Of Christ Church since 2002 and sits on the Bishop of Guildford’s Council and Diocesan Synod.   He started his working life as a doctor, specialising in palliative care of people with AIDS at the Middlesex hospital.  In preparation for the ordained ministry he studied theology at Oxford University, served as curate in Coventry and worked as Associate Vicar for some years in West Kensington.  His two daughters have been educated at Halstead.  Peter is a member of the Marketing Committee and the Bursary Committee.

Faith Kitchen has 20 years’ experience in the insurance industry, holding leadership roles in Underwriting, Marketing and Product Development, before being appointed Director - Education and Heritage for Ecclesiastical Insurance in 2015.  Faith has had continuous involvement with the Education sector throughout her career, both in a professional and volunteering capacity and she was previously a business adviser for the Young Enterprise programme. Faith was elected as a Governor in 2018 and is part of the Property and Health & Safety Committee. 

Mr C. Muller B.A.

Chris Muller is Head of Sir William Perkins’s School. He was previously Deputy Head there and Head of Sixth Form at Kingston Grammar School. He read Classics at University College London. He has two children and his wife, Tracy, is a teacher at Epsom College. Chris is also a Governor of North East Surrey College of Technology in Epsom.  Chris is Chair of the Education Committee and the Governor responsible for EYFS at Halstead.


Jill Owen is a chartered psychologist and runs a private practice in Pirbright with referrals from GPs and the Priory, as well as various sport organisations.  She has a doctorate in counselling psychology and the majority of her clients are referred for anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and stress-related issues.  She is also a sports psychologist.
Jill’s daughters both went to Halstead from Nursery to Year 6. Jill was elected a Governor in 2016, is a member of the Education Committee and the nominated SEN Governor.

Mrs A. Stewart MA, P.G.C.E.

Ann-Marie Stewart began her teaching career in Glasgow before spending 20 years living and teaching in the Middle East. Posts include the Head of the Languages Department at the Bahrain International School and Head of French in St Christopher’s Junior School in Bahrain. On her return to the UK she has been Head of Year 6 at Guildford High School. Her first Headship was at St Teresa’s Prep School in Effingham. After 10 successful years she moved to St Catherine’s as Head of Prep which she retired from in 2018.  She was a Parent Governor at the Royal Kent School in Oxshott, which her three sons attended and has been a governor at Halstead since 2011. Ann-Marie is the Governor responsible for Safeguarding. She also Co-Chairs the Property and Health & Safety Committee and is a member of the Education Committee.
