Years 1 and Year 2

The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of the pupils is excellent.
ISI Inspection Report 2014

In Year 1 and Year 2 we use the National Curriculum as a foundation for our planning but develop and extend this as we plan for the individual girls’ progress. Every girl will read daily to the Class Teacher, our Reading Support Teacher or the Teaching Assistant, and will bring home a book to share with you. In this way we hope to engender not only proficient readers but a real love of reading. We ensure that the girls benefit from a rich and stimulating range of subjects and topics. The girls are taught English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHEE) and RE predominantly by the Form Teacher.  Subject specialist teaching is given in Physical Education, Dance, Music, Art, Design and Food Technology, ICT, Drama, French and Swimming (which begins in Year 2).

Through a termly Pre-Prep 'theme week' the girls further learn to explore, investigate and recognise cross-curricular links under an umbrella theme. Recent Theme Week topics have included ‘The Circus’, ‘Space’ ‘Under the Sea’ and ‘Traditional Tales’. We welcome a wide range of activities, speakers and workshops into school to enrich the girls’ learning across the curriculum as well as going on trips to interesting places.

ICT is often used to enhance learning and we encourage the girls to become independent, confident and responsible users of ICT in order to prepare them for life in an increasingly ICT rich world. To this end we often include interactive whiteboards and iPads in the wide variety of learning resources in our lessons.

We like to keep parents informed and offer a number of talks through which we share our methods in teaching reading, Mathematics, developing comprehension skills and our topics for the year. Parents also receive a curriculum booklet at the start of each academic year.
