Halstead St Andrew's pupil selected as wreath layer for ANZAC Day 2024

On 24 April 2024 a service was held at Westminster Abbey, London to mark ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day.

Year 6 pupil, Edith W, was nominated to represent the youth of New Zealand and Australia at the service, which was attended by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh as well as various members from the Australian High Commission. Other distinguished guests including the former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, Julie Bishop, where in attendance.

Edith had the role of wreath bearer for the dawn Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving and performed a reading.

Edith’s father, Graham, said: “It was an incredible day and a privilege to be there for the entire day, starting with the Dawn Service, followed by a Gunshot Breakfast at the RAF Club in Mayfair, followed by the main Service at Westminster Abbey.”

“It’s not every day the King of England's brother walks up to you and says 'well done' as he leaves Westminster Abbey!”

Edith was nominated by her mother, Justine, who works for Tourism New Zealand.

Acting Head at Halstead St Andrew’s, Miss Eaton added: “We were thrilled to hear that Edith had been selected to be the youth representative of New Zealand and Australia at such a prestigious event. It’s an experience and opportunity that will remain with Edith for a lifetime.”
